Space and Time at the Vaccination Clinic

The centerpiece of Fukui domain’s vaccination program was the clinic in the castle town, which was first located at Kasahara Hakuō's own house and later in a building provided by the domain. This pathway explores the use of space inside the latter version of Fukui's vaccination clinic. Because vaccination was a strictly sequential process, the spatial layout channeled the movements of both doctors and children (and their caregivers) so their bodies would serve the purpose of perpetuating the vaccine over time.
