"Fierce Smugglers Caused Disturbance," 1886

In October 1886 (September in the Chinese lunar calendar), several dozens of smuggling boats appeared on Wenzhou’s waters. The Corps of Catching Salt Smugglers already heard of this. They lay in wait in the region close to the water, and then opened fire to the smuggling boats when the latter passed by. The smuggling boats were not equipped with cannons, so they sent several smugglers to carry swords and jump onto the official’s boats. The two sides then fought fiercely on the ocean. Many were injured in the fight. Four smugglers were caught, and two officers were kidnapped. Only one smuggling boat was captured by the officers.
