Exhibition catalogues and books with reproductions (gashū)
Exhibition catalogues and special issues of popular magazines dedicated to the official exhibitions provided a traveling repository of images for public and personal libraries, extending the life of the exhibition beyond its temporal frame and site. Publishers referenced the similarities between the exhibition and the book format when, for example, they advertised the collected volumes of the Sekai bijutsu zenshū (World Art Series) as a “great exhibition of world art” (sekai bijutsu no dai tenrankai) (ADD REF).
Taiwan Government-General Library had in its collection all the annual catalogues of the official salon in Tokyo, the Ministry of Education Fine Arts Exhibition and its successor, the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts Exhibition. In addition, the library acquired a copy of the Dai13kai Chōsen bijutsu tenrankai zuroku (Thirteenth Korea Fine Arts Exhibition Catalogue, 1934), bringing the colonized Korean art world closer to the art interested readers in Taiwan.
